3D printing technology and traditional craftsmanship fashion shoes EXCIDIUM

There are several 3D printed shoes, insoles and other companies on the market today. However, no company has combined traditional shoemaking techniques with 3D printing. The current 3D printing technology, due to limited materials, is often printed out of hard materials, and our feet need a soft and comfortable environment, so fully 3D printed shoes don't always feel comfortable. Therefore, as far as the current technical conditions are concerned, it is ideal to combine the traditional shoemaking process with 3D printing. Hard parts such as soles are printed in 3D, while other parts use traditional techniques.

Recently, two young and talented fashion designers Chris van den Elzen and Judith van Vliet followed this idea and designed a series of shoes called EXCIDIUM. This shoe combines the advantages of traditional shoemaking technology with 3D printing: the shape is complex and interesting, and it is comfortable to wear.

EXCIDIUM's design was inspired by abandoned old buildings that were overwhelmed by nature. Van den Elzen explained: “These abandoned buildings are full of man-made ornaments but are conquered by natural forces. They are dead and independent.”

The upper part of the shoe is made of calfskin, while the upper and the sole are printed using 3D, a special kind of wire made by ColorFabb. This kind of wire is called woodFill, something printed with woodFill will show a wood-like texture. Van den Elzen outsourced the 3D scanning and printing to a man named Peggy Bannenberg.

If you look closely at the pictures below, you'll find that the shoes are quite complex, but if you don't already have the tips above, you may not notice that the design in the lower part is almost entirely 3D printed.

EXCIDIUM shoes will be on display at the International Fashion Week in Amsterdam on July 11th.
