For Delta servers that control the output of laser imagesetters, system maintenance is important because it is the overall control of the output data and hardware. Once the system crashes or fails, reinstalling the system and operating software is very cumbersome. Using Ghost software to create a disk image file, you can easily maintain the prepress output server.
1. The main function of Ghost
The basic method of working with Ghost is different from other backup software. It operates as a partition or hard disk of an HDD as an object. It can completely copy objects, including the hard disk partition information of the object, the boot area information of the operating system, etc., and is packaged and compressed. As an image file, if necessary, the image file can be restored to the corresponding partition or the corresponding hard disk. Its functions include duplication between two hard disks, partition duplication of two hard disks, duplication of hard disks between two computers, and production of hard disk image files. The more used is the partition backup function. It can backup a partition of a hard disk into an image file, and then store it in another partition hard disk or a large-capacity mobile storage. Once a problem occurs in the original partition, it can be backed up. The image file is copied back and the partition is restored. For the prepress output system, using Ghost software to "clone" the hard disk can quickly and easily implement the system's rapid installation and recovery, and it is easier to maintain.
2. Making NT Network Boot Disk
The purpose of making an NT network boot disk is to boot directly from a DOS floppy disk and log in to a Windows NT network. First of all, you must put the installation CD of Windows NT Server 4.0 into the CD-ROM drive, the specific steps are as follows:
(1) Click "Start" Jing Xin Li → "Programs" → "Administrative Tools" → "Network Client Manager" item.
(2) In the "Network Client Manager" window, select "Make Network Installation Boot Disk" and click the "Continue" button.
(3) At this moment, the "Shared Network Client Installation File" window pops up, the path is set to the clients directory on the NT Server 4.0 installation CD, and is shared as Clients0, the default option, click "OK".
(4) When "Target Workstation Configuration" appears, select "Drive A", "Network Client" select "Network client v3.0 for MSDOS and Windows", and "Network Adapter Card" select the corresponding network card type. "Confirm button. If you do not have the network card you are using, manually modify the system after generating the boot disk. Ini and protocol.ini two files, the system.ini "network drivers" in netcard=ne2000.dos to your network card driver name, the protocol.ini "ms" drivername to you The driver name of the network card can be.
(5) In the "Network Boot Disk Configuration" window, "Computer Name" is set to "SERVER"; "User Name" is set to "Administrator" or other user; "Domain" is set to the domain name of the server to be logged in, such as DOMAIN "Network Protocol" selects the "NetBEUI" protocol; "Target Path" is "A:\". After setting, click "OK". At this time, after inserting the system floppy disk into A drive and pressing "OK", a boot disk is created.
(6) Finally, we modify the contents of the Autoexec.bat batch file in the floppy disk as follows.
PATH=A: \NET;A: \
A:\NET\NET INITIALIZE
A:\NET\NETBEUI
A:\NET\NET START NET USE Z:\\SERVER\Ghost (Map the shared folder Ghost on the server with the Z drive on the workstation).
3, server backup and recovery
First, set the operating system and various software installations on the server correctly (all installed on the C drive), and then use the NT network startup disk to log in to the server.
(1) Server System Backup
Ghost backup is divided into two types: the entire hard disk (Disk) and hard disk partition (Partition). Start Ghost software, select "Local → Partition → To Image" in the Symantec main menu, "selec local source drive by clicking on the drive number" dialog box, select the default value "selec source partition from drive:1" dialog box , and then select the default value, click "OK", "File name to copy image to" dialog box appears, click on the "File name" dialog box, select the backup stored directory path and enter the image file name. Note that the name of the image file has the gho suffix (for example, F:\winnt.gho). After the carriage return, the "Compress image file" dialog box appears and gives 3 choices. "No" indicates no compression; "Fast" indicates Smaller compression and faster backup execution; "High" is high-compression but slower backup execution. Finally, select the "Yes" button to start the backup of the partitioned hard disk. The Ghost backup is very fast and the backup can be completed quickly.
(2) Restore the installation server
Use a network boot floppy disk to boot other workstations, network the server, and map the Ghost directory under the server to a Z network virtual drive. After entering the Z drive, start the network drive with the mapping file and Ghost.exe installed; start Ghost.exe, select "Local → Patition → From Image" menu in the Symantec main menu, "File name to load image from" dialog box appears, Select the Z virtual drive, click "winnt.gho" and the "selec source partition from image file" dialog box appears. Select the default value and the "selec local destination drive by clicking on the drive number" dialog box appears. Select the default value "selec destination partitlon from drive:1" dialog box, select the default value, then the system will perform the loading partition process, which takes about ten minutes.
Restart the machine, the computer will automatically set the system, and then start the machine into the Windows NT environment, right-click "My Network Places → Properties", in the logo to change the content you need, the corresponding settings in the configuration also have to change, such as the IP address .
4. Precautions for using Ghost
There are two points to note when using Ghost. First, whether it is a backup or a recovery partition, you should try to do it in a pure DOS environment. Generally, do not perform corresponding operations from fake DOS or Windows. Second, use Ghost for hard disk (or Partition) When duplicating, the hard disk (or partition) with the same or large capacity is cloned from a hard disk (or partition) with a small capacity and there is no problem, and the target hard disk, like the source disk, is larger than the capacity of the source disk and becomes a free space. .
When the system is backed up, the image files made at different times can be saved according to the time names, such as winnt_20020621.gho, and then the image file gho together with Ghost software can be copied to another workstation for storage, or carved into a CD. In this way, when the entire hard disk crashes or fails, select a certain time file that you want to restore to recover, and use Ghost to copy the target partition (hard disk) exactly as the source partition (hard disk) and realize partitioning, formatting, and copying. The one-step completion of the system and the file can restore the system conveniently and quickly, and achieve the purpose of improving the maintenance efficiency and quality.
