Nanoscale 3D printing enhanced atomic force microscope performance

3D printing technology has been used for microscopy for a long time. A few years ago, the Swedish company Scrona printed a microscope in 3D that allowed it to be used to see "self-portraits" of nanoscale 3D printing. According to the research team that printed nanoscale sensors, the atomic force microscope works like a record player: a nanometer probe sweeps every atom on the surface of the sample, and the sensor records the up and down motion data of the probe, which is then And converted into surface graphics.

By minimizing the size of the sensor on the probe, the overall performance of the microscope can be enhanced, and sensitivity and detection speed can be increased. The EPFL research team used nanoscale 3D printing technology to create a 5 nm thick sensor. In this way, the size of the probe is reduced by a factor of 100.

Since the range of probe motion recorded by the sensor is atomic, the research team developed a sensor made of highly conductive nano-platinum particles wrapped in an insulating carbon matrix. Carbon blocks electrons, but due to nanoscale quantum effects, some electrons still pass through carbon, jumping from one nanoparticle to another. This causes the shape of the sensor to change, thereby recording the relevant data. According to the researchers, the biggest difficulty in this project is that 3D printing nano-scale sensors must also ensure their overall structure and properties are stable.
