New Optically Transparent Plastics--Amorphous Polyolefins

From the perspective of current demand and long-term prospects, the development of optical information is very strong and attractive. Transparency plastics such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) have not only good optical properties, but also have Lightweight, impact resistant and easy to molding and processing plastic properties, it can replace the inorganic glass, widely used in the optical field, plastic optical materials have become optical equipment other than glasses, optical discs, optical fiber, liquid crystal displays and other optical information field Indispensable material. The disadvantages of PMMA and PC are: PMMA has a high water absorption rate and the PC has a large birefringence, thus promoting the development of new optically transparent plastics with excellent properties, entering the same application market as PMMA and PC, in which amorphous type poly Olefins are the most representative products.
Three Japanese companies have introduced amorphous polyolefins to the market, namely Arton from Japan Synthetic Rubber (JSR), Zeonex from Zeon Corporation, Zeonor from Zeon Corporation, and Apel from Mitsui. Amorphous polyolefins have the following characteristics:
(1) The density is small, about 10% lower than PMMA and PC, which is beneficial to the product's light weight;
(2) Saturated water absorption is low, and Arton's water absorption rate is far lower than that of PMMA. It will not affect the physical properties caused by water absorption. Zeonex, Zeonor, and Apel almost do not absorb water.
(3) Since it contains monomers with small polarity and anisotropy, it is an amorphous transparent material and has a small birefringence;
(4) is a high heat resistance transparent resin glass transition temperature of 140 ~ 170 °C, the glass transition temperature is the heat resistance of amorphous polymer indicators;
(5) Easy injection molding;
(6) Excellent mechanical properties, tensile strength, elastic modulus higher than PC;
(7) Excellent reproducibility, so the product quality is high;
(8) Low dielectric constant, especially good high-frequency performance, is the best material for dielectric properties of thermoplastics;
(9) Good scratch resistance, Arton pencil hardness is similar to PMMA, and scratch resistance is an important performance index of optical materials;
(10) Arton molecules have polar groups in the side chains, and have good adhesiveness with inorganic and organic materials and are easy to seal;
(11) Zeonex and Zeonor are green plastics with very little impurities, so there is no need to worry about the analysis of debris, suitable for semiconductor and medical device requirements;
(12) Zeonex, Zeonor, Apel have excellent chemical resistance, acid resistance, and alkali resistance;
(13) Zeonex, Zeonor, Apel is almost impermeable to water vapor and meets the requirements of applications requiring moisture protection.
