With these two points in mind, the author of the article, Federica Sotgia of the University of Salford and the team speculate that the antioxidant properties of NAC may "starve" cancer cells.

Encouraging results

To validate the conjecture, the research team recruited 12 women with stage 0 or stage 1 breast cancer for related trials. Within 3 weeks of the patient's diagnosis from surgery to surgery, they will receive NAC treatment, including weekly intravenous injections (150 mg/kg each), and daily (except for those on the intravenous day). Secondary NAC tablets (600 mg per dose).

Before and after surgery, the patient's tumor tissue will undergo biopsy analysis, focusing on three markers (related to cancer progression and poor overall survival): MCT4, CAV1 and Ki67. The results showed that the level of Ki67 was reduced by 25%, while the level of MCT4 was reduced by 80%.

This means that NAC can inhibit the expression of MCT4 protein in a non-toxic manner, thereby preventing the growth and division of cancer cells.

The Sotgia team hopes that this latest study will “re-energize” the cheap drugs that the FDA has approved to bring new options to cancer treatment.
