Outline the principles of thermal paper

Thermal paper is also known as thermal fax paper, thermal recording paper, thermal copy paper, and is called thermal copy paper in Taiwan. Thermal paper is a kind of processed paper, which is manufactured by coating a layer of "heat-sensitive paint" (thermographic color-changing layer) on high-quality base paper. Although there are more than ten kinds of chemicals used in this color changing layer, at least the following compounds are available: leuco dyes, which are widely used, the most commonly used are fluorescent compounds; the color developing agent accounts for about 20% or less, and the commonly used ones have double Phenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid; sensitizer accounted for less than 10%, which contains benzenesulfonic acid amide compounds; fillers accounted for less than 50%, commonly used calcium carbonate (microparticles); adhesives accounted for less than 10%, Such as polyvinyl acetate; stabilizers, such as para-benzoic acid dibenzoyl; lubricants and the like. Therefore, the process is difficult and the technical requirements are high.

Principle of thermal paper

When the thermal paper is placed in an environment above 70 ° C, the heat-sensitive coating begins to change color. The reason for its discoloration is also to talk about its ingredients.

There are two main types of heat sensitive materials in thermal paper coatings: one is a leuco dye or a leuco dye; the other is a color developer. This type of thermal paper is also referred to as a two-component chemical type thermal recording paper.

Commonly used as leuco dyes are: crystal violet lactone (CVL), fluoran system, colorless benzoylmethylene blue (BLMB) or spiropyran system of triphenylmethyl phenyl hydrazine system.

The commonly used dispersants are mainly: polyvinyl alcohol L-3266, polyvinyl alcohol GL-05, polyvinyl alcohol KL-03 (produced by Japan Synthetic Chemicals).

The commonly used top coat and primer additives are: gohsefimer Z-200, polyvinyl alcohol T-350, polyvinyl alcohol N-300.

Commonly used as a color developer are: para-hydroxybenzoic acid and its esters (PHBB, PHB), salicylic acid, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid or aromatic sulfone.

When the thermal paper is heated, the leuco dye reacts with the developer to produce a color. Therefore, when using thermal paper to receive signal printing on a fax machine or directly printing it with a thermal printer, the graphic is displayed. Since there are many kinds of varieties used as leuco dyes, the color of the written characters is different, and there are blue, magenta, black, and the like.
