Stora Enso Smart Packaging Launches ECO Sustainable RFID Tag Technology

Stora Enso introduces the new sustainable RFID (radio frequency identification) tag technology, ECOTMbyStoraEnso, designed to enhance the functionality of smart packaging in supply chain, retail and e-commerce applications. This technology makes paper-based RFID tags possible, providing a plastic-free, recyclable solution for packaging verification.

The RFID technology developed and launched by Stora Enso Smart Packaging enables automatic tracking, tracing and tampering of packaged products throughout the supply chain. Stora Enso's ECO technology enables RFID tags to be produced on 100% wood fiber-based paper labels. The former can be a sustainable B2B (Business-to-Business) compared to traditional plastic labels. Enterprise) and B2C (Business-to-Customer) companies bring a lower carbon footprint.

“The launch of ECOTM opens up a truly sustainable path for our customers and consumers, accelerating Stora Enso's application of smart technology in renewable solutions,” said Stora Enso, Smart Packaging Leader “Our ECO technology is arguably unique because it provides RFID end users with a choice of recyclable and plastic-free layers for a digital, sustainable packaging infrastructure,” says MartinRos.

By combining RFID with paper labels, the manufacturing process becomes more flexible, resulting in cost-effectiveness, performance and reliability without compromise. ECO labels can be recycled with paper and cardboard materials and are environmentally friendly, and ECO labels are less costly and highly conductive than graphene or silver printed antennas. Currently, this technology has been used in a number of ongoing cross-domain collaborative projects.

About Stora Enso Smart Packaging

Stora Enso's smart packaging uses RFID technology to automate the tracking, tracing and tampering of packaged products throughout the supply chain. RFID is a wireless communication technology used to transmit electronic data stored on tags attached to a package. This technology can identify hundreds of items in less than a second without the need to directly align the recognizer. In addition, it allows communication between brands and end users through the use of smartphones that support NFC (Near Field Communication Technology). The solution provides a full read system and is tracked in conjunction with the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. More details on smart packaging can be found at https://
