Modern Offset Press Automatic Chromaticity Measurement and Adjustment Technology

When automatic chromaticity measurement and adjustment technology seems to have become the standard in the field of web offset printing, sheet-fed offset printing is now increasingly using this technology. This is not only to make the whole batch of prints comply with the quality standards, but also to quickly adjust and reduce the offset paper used to adjust the ink color when frequently changing parts, which is conducive to environmental protection and cost reduction. Today, the automatic color measurement and adjustment system for sheetfed offset printing has different expansion levels and price differences. Recently, "German Printer" brought together the system solutions launched on the market, and comprehensively introduced the three latest systems introduced by Manroland, Heidelberg and KBA.

Manroland

Grapho Metronic received the color measurement and adjustment system in Munich. The company was built in 1967 and has been integrated in Manroland as a subsidiary since 1992. Manroland has an Inline Color Pilot automatic ink supply control system for 3B format printing presses. It can measure and adjust the ink color without drawing out the sheet, and the ink color density is measured at the full speed of the Manroland 700 printer. The InlineColor Pilot on-line automatic ink supply control system can record the color value of the entire batch of prints, helping the printing plant avoid unreasonable complaints from customers. The system can be used for 3B format Manroland 700 Hiprint and Manroland 700 Directdrive. According to Manroland, the Inline Color Pilot automatic ink supply control system is equipped on the Manroland 700 Directdrive offset printing machine with coating and extended delivery, to complete the calculation of 2,750 jobs per year, and two shifts need not be produced for two years. You can repay the investment (the recommended cleaning interval is 80 days).

The offline Color Pilot automatic ink supply and control system is used in the Manroland 500 and all large format machines. The complete set of measurement and control strips on the 3B format printing sheet can be measured in less than 14 seconds. In the density measurement, a polarization filter conforming to the standard is used, so inline density measurement can be performed, but the polarization color filter is not used for measuring the chromaticity value. In addition, the "OK-Balance" color control function option for the Inline Color Pilot automatic ink supply control system was developed in cooperation with the Brunner system to ensure the maximum possible ink color stability of the entire batch of prints Because the field adjustment of the Color Pilot system supplements the color balance adjustment, this takes into account that the human eye's fluctuations when observing the four-color image and the third hue are much larger than when observing the field.

KBA

KBA can provide different expansion levels for ink color measurement and adjustment systems. Densitronic is a purely offline density measurement and adjustment system for quality control of pure density measurement. The density meter is installed directly on the Ergotronic console of the Rapida sheetfed offset press. The measurement process of the Rapida 75 offset press takes 4 seconds, and the Rapida 205 mainframe takes 8 seconds. The measurement and adjustment system is available for Rapida 75, 105, 106, 130-162 and 185-205 models.

The characteristic of the Densitronic Professional system is that the density meter and the spectrophotometer are installed on the combined measuring head of the air bearing, so in addition to collecting ink color density (density determination), the color value can also be determined during the measurement process. In particular, the measurement and control system is directly placed next to the console of the printing press, which can centrally control multiple printing presses. Spectral measurement is as usual, without the use of polarizer density measurement. The system can be used with Rapida 105, 106, 130-142, 162a and 185-205 models.

When the Qualitronic on-line system is used to verify printed sheets, the Qualitronic Color Control (color quality control) involves a complete on-line chromaticity measurement and adjustment system. According to KBA estimates, the use of Qualitronic ColorControl (color quality control) can reduce the number of page waste by up to 30%, and can also preset the measured value balance between dry and wet. Different functions such as ink color database and substrate database can store material and process-specific adjustments, and color changes during drying also belong to this adjustment. 90% of new customers directly focus on the Densitronic system, and 15% of customers focus on Qualitronic system solutions. The Qualitronic system is an independent invention of KBA. The Densitronic system is manufactured by Lithec. KBA has some patents in this special field, such as DE102006009383A1 (in-line adjustment method and equipment of inking unit) and DE 102006009382A1 (ink and fountain volume adjustment method and equipment).

Heidelberg

Heidelberg has 3 different color measurement and adjustment systems. Prinect Axis Control works with all Speedmaster SM 52 to XL 162 offset presses. Prinect Image Control is used to control Speedmaster SM 52 to XL 105, SM 102 and CD 102 series. Prinect InpressControl is the most automated because it can work inline in the final printing unit, but it is only suitable for a few printing machines such as Speedmaster XL 75, XL145 and XL 162. When encountering the problem of wet measurement, manufacturers follow some instructions specified by ISO / POS (International Standard for Offset Printing Process). In order to achieve the required standard, the dry / wet inking values are determined in the order of inking; in order to achieve the required dry value of the standard, the corresponding wet value is stored in the measuring instrument. Axis Control adopts spectrophotometric measurement. By connecting with the Printect PressCenter, it can print up to 8 units of inline color adjustment for the front and back sides, and can achieve high-speed measurement of 200 mm per second. The printed measurement and control strip can be arbitrarily positioned on the printed sheet. The system can automatically find and identify the type of measurement and control strip in the 40 mm channel, which can save manual adjustment.

Image Control, as a central chromaticity measurement and adjustment system, is suitable for controlling 4 printing machines. It can be attached with measurement color patches for printing measurement and control strips to automatically adjust the image on the printed sheet when the hue value fluctuates. This is very useful for logos or colored fields, because logos or colored fields must absolutely conform to the corporate identity logo. Image Control can measure about 160,000 points in 25 seconds.

The Inpress Control system is especially suitable for printing service providers who frequently change jobs and short-run jobs. The system works in line, not only automatically measuring and adjusting the ink color, but also adjusting the overprinting rules, and continuously monitoring the continuous printing to ensure that the ink color of the entire batch of prints is stable. The disadvantage of the Inpress system is that it cannot control multiple printers. In addition, Heidelberg will also introduce new products for color measurement and adjustment systems at Ipex 2010.

how to choose

If people do n’t want to adopt a solution that comes directly from the printing press, how do they choose? The first thing to know is that it is almost impossible for an outside manufacturer to have an on-line chromaticity measurement and adjustment system, because this system works in the printing unit. For many users, offline measurement and adjustment is sufficient.

There are several suppliers in this regard, of which Techkon and Xrite are well-known. Techkon provides a flexible ink color and density measurement system called Spectro-Drive, which consists of a measuring instrument mounted on a slide rail and a Techkon Expresso window software. The software wirelessly receives the measurement results from the measuring instrument and processes the fast visual analysis on the monitor. The advantage of Spectro-Drive is that it can be used for any printing size. The software can process up to 16 inking devices. If you want to directly transfer the data to the ink color adjustment device (closed loop) of the printing press, you can output the measurement data to other through JDF program.

Since the Spectro-Drive measuring instrument can be removed from the slide rail by pressing the handle, it quickly became a convenient handheld measuring instrument.

X-Rite

X-Rite has the Intellitrax product line in the field of color measurement. The measurement process of the printed measurement and control strip only takes 15 seconds. The measurement system works compatible with CIP4, that is, it supports CIP4 preset data and JDF for quick adjustment. The system has a variety of expansion levels. The primary system Intellitrax D automatically measures density in four-color mode. The Intellitrax system, which is the "standard" for automatic color measurement, is designed for four-color and multi-color printing. In addition, Intellitrax ICC is suitable for making ICC files for printing machines. [next]

Brunel Systems

For decades, Brunel Systems Switzerland has been engaged in the research and development of color measurement for offset printing. Printing measurement and control strips and maintaining an accurate balance between color and gray values are Brunel's expertise. As early as 1967, the first printing measurement and control strips began to be used in printing plants. Brunner's expertise is focused on software development for quality control and analysis, and the colorimeter itself is not a product it offers.

Brunel Systems has partnered with Quad Tech to provide solutions for web offset presses, while focusing on manroland in sheetfed offset printing. Flight Online is Manroland's expanded Color Pilot automatic ink supply and control system solution. The OK-Balance color control function has also been used for the new Inline Color Pilot automatic ink supply and control system. OK-Balance, including PrintConsult, has sold 1,400 units in the past 10 years, and Flight0nlin instruments have sold about 40 units.

Regarding the measurement of dry / wet problems, Brunel Systems estimates that polarizing filters can help minimize the difference between dry / wet sheets. If the wet printed sheet is adjusted according to the density of the ground or the chromaticity measurement of the ground, the problem is obvious. However, the use of Flight instruments can include most of the process variables produced by the gray balance priority adjustment, thus reducing the impact of dry / wet problems.

DIGITAL INFORMATION

Swiss DIGITAL INFORMATION company provides a full set of ink on-line preset systems for all important printer manufacturers. The company's experts rely on reverse engineering to develop software, because almost no manufacturer makes it voluntarily open the interface for printer ink adjustment control.

According to the manufacturer, there are already 2,000 offset presses connected to DIGITAL INFORMATION's solutions worldwide. On the measuring instrument, Intellitrax of X-Rite and Spectro-Drive of Techkon are supported. As an entry-level solution, the supplier has also developed an electric drive (DC2 / 4/8) for X-Rite's inexpensive Eyeone spectrophotometer, which uses the same drive as Digi-Densi's pure density measuring head.

DIGITAL INFORMATION announced that it will continue to improve the ink color adjustment algorithm for Ipex 2010, connect with the online measurement system and expand the ISO standard report.
